Career Profile: Patent Agent

A Patent agent is a professional who advise clients with regards to matters pertaining to patent law. Often,  they act on behalf of their clients to process or patent an invention. They also help clients register trademarks.

What is a Patent? It is basically a set of rights given by a state or government to the owner of an invention.  Patents are effective for fixed periods of time. The exclusive right granted to a patentee prevent others from exploiting and duplicating the invention without prior consent of the owner. It is applicable in the country in which the patent protection was applied.

A patent examiner assess applications for patents that are submitted by patent agents.

Where are patent agents employed? They are often employed by the government and or patent departments of certain companies.
