The Career Profile of the Marine Engineer will be described in this article. A marine engineer manages all aspects of a ship’s mechanical system including the design, the operation, the maintenance and repairs of a ship.

 

He must possess knowledge in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, control engineering, naval architecture and ship construction and also be interested to keep abreast of technological trends in the offshore and marine sector.

 

He designs the necessary equipment to run the ship whilst working hand in hand with a naval architect who is in charge of designing the ship structure. As the marine engineer plays a vital role in the success of the ship’s construction, he must be a team player, and possess good leadership skills to ensure smooth running of all operations.

 

Armed with skills and knowledge of marine engineering, he may choose to specialize in any machinery on the ship or any process in shipbuilding/ the ship’s function.

 

A Diploma in Marine Engineering/ Marine and Offshore Technology or a Degree in Ocean/ Marine Engineering is required to enter this field. With experience, one may progress from inspecting ships to holding technical or general managerial positions.
